A more modern version of Zorro was made when Disney did Swamp Fox, another take on the lone vigilante with the heart of a gold.
Extending that into the future, we have the more modern Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, a modern swashbuckling, ray-gun toting, fist smashing hero from our time, who fended off space monsters and pirates, and other assorted villains on a weekly basis.
What's really cool about the Swamp Fox was that he later became the Captain of the Starship in Forbidden Planet, and an ongoing outrageously comedic motion picture series, The NakedGun.
Leslie Nielsen was a well rounded actor.
I remember seeing him on the Johnny Carson show and freaking Johnny out with a whoopee cushion that made very loud gas sounds. You know...bluppppth!
I almost fell out of my chair and that would have been a hard thing to do. My stomach ripped with laughter at the distressed look on Mister Carson's face every time the conversation would get halfway serious and Leslie would give another blast of his whoopee cushion.
Now THAT was funny!
Thank you Mister Nielsen, wherever you are in our star studded skies, for the great Robby the Robot sci-fi flick and the nakedly funny detective series among so many other things.

ABC Network1958Drama60 MinutesLeslie Nielsen starred as Francis Marion (1732-95), an early American guerrilla fighter who battled and befuddled the British in the Charleston, South Carolina area.
"My name is Francis Marion. I fought the British Redcoats in '76 - hiding in the Carolina swamps by day, surprising them with swift strikes at night. They called me a tricky swamp fox, so a Swamp Fox I became."

Swamp Fox! Swamp Fox!
Tail on his hat,
Nobody knows where The Swamp Fox's at.
Swamp Fox! Swamp Fox!
Hiding in the glen,
He runs away to fight again.
We got lead, and we got powder.
We don't fight with an empty gun.
Only makes us shout the louder.
We are men of Marion.
Got no blankets, got no bed.
Got no roof above our heads.
Got no shelter when it rains.
All we got is Yankee brains.
Got no cornpone, got no honey.
All we got is Continental money.
Won't buy bacon, hominy or grits.
Roasted ears and possum is all we ever git.
