Zorro, the cunning and sly fox, is always doing the right thing and either being threatened by explosions, fire, beheading, crushed, torn apart, shot, or whatever.
The cool thing about the old matinee serials was basically that you got to sit on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what would happen next, munching on a box of popcorn and slurping a soda, while all your friends about you tossed spitballs at the villains on the screen, screamed and yelled when Zorro won the day and hissed and booed and yelled when the villain got the upperhand.
None of it was real, of course, but for a kid that larger than life screen propelled us into a fantasy that took us away from the fear of Atomic War and having our life turn into a heap of burned ashes on a sidewalk like those poor souls we did that to in Japan during World War Two.
