I thought it'd be helpeful to go straight from the tutorial to the examples below. When I teach about shading, I always use a variety of examples, because what is evident in one type to one person, might no be to the next.
Also, important in a major way, is not just shading to be shading, but taking into account the direction light is coming from. So I included an example of that as well, and a few pieces of art that use shading intensely to achieve their objective of portraying something real in life.
I've always found that shading adds more sense of depth than just about anything else you can do.
