First off, you're probably wondering what the above tutorial has to do with drawing. Right?
Any aspiring artist worth his salt doesn't just use what appears obvious, but also looks at the not so obvious things.
When you look at the tutorial, just substitute a pencil for the brush he uses, and your fingers and a soft piece of kleenix tissue to get the smeared light.
Do use black paper. You can use white pencil lead, or if you're adventurous, turn to chalk, soft pastels and crayons. I'm sure you can find other things too.
Just draw and allow yourself to use any inspiration that's out there to improve your works
